The Arkansas LadyBacks took on the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes at Bud Walton Arena Wednesday night. Arkansas , 8-1 on the season is coming off a 81-72 win over Kansas State in the SEC/BIG 12 Challenge. Tulsa is 3-6 on the year coming off a 63-51 loss to Little Rock.
The Lady Backs got off to a slow start in the first few minutes of the game but got it going on a 10-2 run to start the game. Arkansas’ defense which is allowing only 63.4 points a game was stingy once again holding Tulsa to 2 first quarter points. Lady backs were shooting 31% from the field and 14% from the 3pt line, leading 14-2 after one frame.
The second quarter Arkansas went on another 10-2 run and Tulsa called a timeout at the 6:52 mark to try and stop the bleeding, with Arkansas up 24-4. Tulsa finally got their offense going scoring 14 in the 2nd led by Rebecca Lescay with 8 points. Arkansas, led by A’Tyanna Gaulden with 7 points , scored 27 in the second quarter making it a 41-16 game at the half.
Alexis Tolefree started off the 2nd half with 2 quick threes and LadyBacks got yet another 10-2 run to start the half leading 51-18. Tolefree stayed hot with a total of 5 3’s and 17 points going into the 4th quarter. LadyBacks held Tulsa to 11 points in the 3rdquarter leading 66-27.
In the final frame, Arkansas put it into cruise control after two back to back three’s by Tolefree and Gaulden. Arkansas started subbing in the reserves with 6 min left in the game as Arkansas runs away with a 91-41 victory.
As impressive as Arkansas was on offense with their balance in scoring and Tolefree’s sharp shooting. The defense was even more impressive holding The Golden Hurricanes leading scorerwho had been averaging 17.8 points per game to just 2 points.They held Tulsa as a team to just 25% from the floor. Arkansas didn’t have the best shooting night from 3 , going 9-27 (33%) and just 42 % from the field.
Alexis Tolefree lead all scorers with 20 points (6 3’s) and A’Tayanna Gaulden added 14. Chelsea Dungee was held to only 8 points . For Tulsa they were led by Addison Richards with 9 points. Erynn Barnum and Rokia Doumbia both had huge nights on the glass adding 12 rebounds each.
Up next for the LadyBacks is Northwestern State in Sunday at 2:00pm. The Demons are 3-4 on the year coming off a 65-61 win over Grambling State.
